Lying awake in bed: how stimulus control works, and what to know before trying it

Stimulus control is one of the methods used in CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia). It aims to break the link between the bed or bedroom and being awake, and to establish a consistent wake-up time.

What the method involves

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine guideline lists these instructions for stimulus control:

• Go to bed only when sleepy
• Get out of bed when unable to sleep
• Use the bed and bedroom only for sleep and sex
• Wake up at the same time every morning (see keeping a consistent wake-up time)
• Refrain from daytime napping

Why it is worked through with a clinician

The guideline says care should be based on a diagnosis and clinical history, and that decisions about any specific care rest with the treating clinician and the patient.

It also says stimulus control may need to be adapted for safety in people at high risk of falls, with mobility issues, or using sedative-hypnotics. If any of these apply to you, talk to a doctor rather than getting out of bed at night on your own judgment.
